Example of
Lack of Maintenance:
An air
conditioner in a computer room system was left unmaintained for
7 months. After the system running all that time, the filters
became blocked, and the coil became dirty. The indoor fan of the
indoor unit developed an unhealthy build up of dirt and bacteria
(it had physical appearance of fluff on the fan).
The result was
that the fan could not create sufficient airflow across the
coil. The system continued to call for cooling, and combined
with limited airflow, the coil iced up. Eventually this
overloaded the system, and the system failed. When the ice
defrosted, it was too much water for the drain to cope with and
resulted in water leaking out of the system, flooding the floor
and damaging the floor coverings.
The temperature in the room
went up, and the servers were stressed out. This is only an
example, and has occurred many times over in areas including
bedrooms and living rooms.
This type of
neglect can lead to health issues, damage to the air conditioner
unit, as well as the contents of the area that it services,
which in turn can also lead to financial loss. This could be
avoided by maintenance of the system, with frequency dependent
upon the use and location.
